Duane Deters is the primary criminal defense attorney at Fischer and Wozniak, P.C., handling all criminal cases that come into the firm. Duane was a prosecuting attorney for 15 years in Coles and Macon Counties prior to entering private practice and he uses that prosecution experience to defend his clients by being able to anticipate the moves of the State’s Attorney. Over his prosecutorial career, Duane was the Chief Prosecutor in the DUI unit in Macon County, responsible for the training of young lawyers and bringing new prosecutorial techniques to the courtroom. While in Coles County, Duane worked many serious felony cases, including being a part of the only death penalty case in Coles County in the last 20 years. Duane has gone to jury trial on nearly 100 serious felony cases including Murder, Armed Robbery, Residential Burglary and Aggravated Battery and Attempted Murder of a Police Officer.
Good communication is a key component to a successful criminal case. Our lawyers will keep you informed about your case at every step of the process. We carefully explain all of the options available to you and provide reasoned advice about how to proceed. We strive to have charges against our clients dismissed prior to trial. If that is not possible, we aggressively advocate for a reduction of charges. In some cases, a plea bargain that minimizes the consequences of a conviction is the best possible outcome but we are seasoned trial attorneys who are prepared to present a strong defense in court. We thoroughly investigate the circumstances of the charges our clients face and carefully craft a strong defense.

If you or a loved one is facing criminal charges, contact us to schedule a consultation to discuss your case. Our firm has offices in Urbana and Mattoon to better serve you. We represent people in need of a strong criminal defense in Effingham, Cumberland, Coles, Douglas, Moultrie Champaign, Vermilion, McLean, Dewitt, Piatt and Macon Counties.
